Born to be Wild

August 6, 2014 by Darrel Current

Yesterday, my dad, brother, and I went on an eight mile canoeing trip down the Flat Rock River.  Our first discovery is that it is very difficult to

row a canoe in shallow water.  We went on a day with a low water level   and faced many shallow rapids and shelves of flat rock with about one inch deep water in some parts.  I am around five foot and could stand in the deepest part.We also discovered why it is named flat rock; the bottom is mainly composed of a large, flat rock!

It was actually pretty dangerous, considering the low water level and many, many rapids we traveled through, but we did it anyway.  Girls would typically be scared by an adventure like what we endured, but to us, it was fun.  The dangerous rapids and low-water dams thrilled us.  At one point, we came to a low-water dam with a live tree stretching across the point we would flow through.  The water was moving too fast to stop, and we hadn’t gotten the canoe pointing through the right area yet.  We headed right for a branch at chest level, and I couldn’t stop.  I ducked backwards just in time to avoid getting hit by a tree branch.  Te me, it seemed like an adventure movie as I dodged the branch and began working on turning the head of the canoe in the direction that would get the canoe to flow down the dam and on through the river.  Meanwhile, my brother and dad worked on getting the back of the canoe facing the front and getting unstuck by pulling on the branch to bull the canoe backwards so I could maneuver the front.

All of this would have freaked out my little sister, but we were loving it. We love going on little adventures like that just for the thrill of it.  Today I am sore, but it was well worth it.  My brother and I are reading the book Wild at Heart and are learning that this is just something men are born to love, we love adventure.   That is why little boys love to play swords and make things explode, they love the adventure.

All men are born to be wild, they are a fierce lion, do not cage that lion, he wants to be free to roam and roar and show his strength.

Thanks for commenting! Sorry I haven’t posted in a while. I will try to post more often now that summer is ending and I will be home more often.

Sounds like you had a great adventure with your dad and brother! Great illustration of what the book Wild at Heart is about. I loved that book. Glad you are reading it.
